Why Room Treatment?

Digital Room Correction (DRC) has come a long way, especially in recent years. However, it is a misconception that Digital Room Correction can get rid of all issues.

While it is true that DRC can improve the frequency and time-domain response of a system, it cannot fully take away distortion introduced by early reflections and room modes, especially when those modes create nulls – areas of low pressure in the room.

What’s more, most DRC systems focus on correcting the frequency-domain, but not the time-domain. Even those that focus on both, time-domain issues of phase and group-delay are easy to fix. Reverberation and smearing of the impulse response is nearly impossible to fix without room treatment.

It is true that in the age of Active Room Treatment aka Trinnov and Dirac Live, this smearing in the bass response is going to be easier to fix – as long as you have the correct number of and location for your subwoofers.

However, this is not the case for the majority of setups and not true of anything above around 200Hz. So room treatment, even in the most advanced home theatres, continues to be a critical aspect in achieving ideal sound quality and transparency.

DIY your room treatment, you won't be disappointed

I've just started building my own speakers thanks to a separate guide from this author and have started looking into building my own room treatment panels thanks to this guide.

Super excited to tie it all together after being underwhelmed by my home theatre experience for years.
