The Challenge
A few years ago, we set out to find speakers that could truly recreate the sound of a commercial theater. However, the DIY and commercial options were either too large for us or too expensive. We wanted speakers with the same punch but in a compact form that could fit typical home spaces, using horn-loaded compression drivers for the efficiency and clarity that define a cinema-like experience.
That journey led to the development of the LCR10, but from the beginning, we knew a full system would require more than just great front stage speakers. To preserve proper timbre matching and seamless panning, we needed surround speakers built on the same design principles.
The Solution
The SUR08 was created to complete the system. It brings the same design principles as the LCR10 into a more compact, but still high-performance surround speaker, perfectly voiced to match, with the output and clarity to deliver convincing effects at cinematic levels in a smaller package.
We designed the SUR08 speaker guide to be just as simple and accessible as building our LCR10s—empowering anyone, from first-time builders to seasoned DIYers, to construct high-performance surround speakers that match their front stage in both sound and intent. Our goal is to help you build a fully immersive cinema system that fits your space, your budget, and your creative vision.
We’re thrilled with how the SUR08 completes the lineup. We’ve integrated these surrounds into our own theaters and tested them extensively with the LCR10 to ensure seamless panning and consistent voicing. We hope you enjoy building and listening to these speakers as much as we enjoyed designing them!

Comprehensive SUR08 Speaker Building Guide

- Perfect for baffle walls, wide channels, or height layers where space is tight but performance can’t be compromised.
Big Performance. Smaller Package.
- 92dB sensitivity and 250W RMS handling
- Clean extension down to 70Hz on-wall means full-range sound and no distortion, all in a smaller design.

Comprehensive Guide for building the SUR08 Speaker
- Size (WxDxH):
- 37.5cm x 22cm x 43cm (WxDxH)
- Frequency Response (+/- 3dB)
- 70Hz to 18kHz
- The B&C DE250 compression driver has an F3 of 18Khz. Since most people over the age of 20 cannot hear over this, we don’t think this is an issue. However, the B&C DE250 has an incredibly smooth and detailed sound across its whole frequency range that is not fatiguing for longer listening sessions – such as 2-3 hour movies at loud volumes – and is considered one of the best compression drivers because of this.
- Directivity: 90H X 40V
- Recommended crossover: 80Hz or lower depending on the room
- MUST BE USED WITH ROOM EQ – since we are using an off-the-shelf crossover, room EQ is a requirement.
- Cost of Build: 1 SUR08 would cost around USD 400 to build

*Graphs do not indicate sensitivity of speaker as currently we do not have a method to control 1W from our amps.
**All data collected was measured using a quasi-anechoic measurement method
