SHC LCR10 DIY Home Cinema Speaker

Why the SHC10 LCR Speaker?

A couple of years ago, we were looking at making high-performance DIY speakers for our own home theatres. However, when looking at the available designs, they were either too deep, lacked adequate bass response or – as in the case of the commercially available Krix speakers in Australia – were using horn-loaded tweeters as opposed to compression drivers used in commercial cinemas.

We not only wanted a system that would meet present needs but also one that could easily change to meet possible future requirements. Investing in speakers, particularly DIY ones, demands both financial resources and time. We were adamant about preserving our investment, should our system requirements evolve down the line. Unfortunately, none of the DIY designs on the market offered the modularity we sought for accommodating various sizes without compromising on performance and quality.

The design we came up with will fit into 30cm deep enclaves with only 50cm of height while still allowing for 3 LCR10 speakers and 2 subs behind a screen. Alternatively, the design can be scaled up to house 60L front LCR speakers with 102L subwoofers for very large rooms that want to hit those deep notes with authority. We hope you enjoy these series of speakers as much as we did designing them, making them and using them in our own home theatres.

We are also designing matching surround speakers to complete the set, which will be ready later in 2024.

Cost and Savings

An equivalent speaker system from Australia – the only available with the same design – the Krix MX30, would set you back USD 15,000 (plus shipping)!!! To build the same speakers, you would only spend around USD 3000 for both the LCRs and the subs*. From that:

  • 1 LCR10 would cost around USD 500 to build (USD 1500 altogether)
  • 1 SUB15 would cost around USD 700 to build (USD 1400 altogether for two subs)

*Surround speakers coming later in the year.

SHC10 Specifications

  • Size (WxDxH):
    • 45cm x 25cm x 50cm (30L size)
    • 45cm x 25cm x 104cm (60L size)
  • Frequency Response (+/- 3dB)
    • 50Hz to 18kHz (30L size)
    • 40Hz to 18kHz (60L size)
    • The B&C DE250 compression driver has an F3 of 18Khz. Since most people over the age of 20 cannot hear over this, we don’t think this is an issue. However, the B&C DE250 has an incredibly smooth and detailed sound across its whole frequency range that is not fatiguing for longer listening sessions – such as 2-3 hour movies at loud volumes – and is considered one of the best compression drivers because of this.
  • Recommended crossover: 40Hz to 60Hz dependent on power fed to the speaker.
  • MUST BE USED WITH ROOM EQ – since we are using an off-the-shelf crossover, room EQ is a requirement.
  • The off-the-shelf crossover does not compromise sound quality – after all you either correct the response in the analogue or digital domain, there are pros and cons of each. However, this makes the design much easier to assemble. We created an equivalent custom-designed crossover during development to confirm the performance of this design. Sound quality to our ears was actually slightly better with less analogue correction of the response.
