SHC LCR10 DIY Home Cinema Speaker

Imagine the powerful, precise bass, the clarity of horn-loaded compression drivers, and the immersive sound of a well-designed commercial theater—all in the comfort of your own home.

The Challenge

A few years ago, we set out to find speakers that could truly recreate the sound of a commercial theater. However, the DIY and commercial options were either too large for us or too expensive. We wanted speakers with the same punch but in a compact form that could fit typical home spaces, using horn-loaded compression drivers for the efficiency and clarity that define a cinema-like experience.

But we didn’t stop there. We knew that our needs might change over time, and we wanted a system that could grow and adapt with us. Especially with DIY speakers, as the investment goes beyond cost—each build takes hours of design and construction. Unfortunately, none of the DIY or commercial designs on the market offered this kind of versatility. So, we committed to a modular design that would allow flexibility, futureproofing our setup without sacrificing sound quality.

The Solution

The smallest configuration, the LCR10 is designed to fit within a compact 30cm-deep enclosure and stands 52cm tall, allowing for the installation of three LCR10 speakers and two of our SUB15 subwoofers behind an AT screen, creating an immersive baffle wall setup. And this design is modular, too! It can be scaled up for larger spaces, with options to house 60L, 1m tall LCR speakers and our 102L SUB15 subwoofers, ensuring you achieve powerful, deep bass with absolute authority.

Knowing that we couldn’t offer fully finished speakers from the start, we still wanted everyone to experience lifelike cinema sound at home. So, we designed this speaker building guide to be simple and accessible, enabling anyone—whether a beginner or experienced DIYer—to build a high-performance, adaptable speaker system that fits into their space, budget, and vision for a true cinema experience. Our goal is to give you the tools and insights to bring the magic of commercial theater sound into your home, making immersive audio accessible to all skill levels.

We’re thrilled with the results, having integrated these speakers into our own theaters, and are now designing matching surround speakers to complete the lineup. We hope you experience as much satisfaction and excitement in building and listening to these speakers as we did creating them!

Comprehensive Guide for building the LCR10 Speaker

SUB15 Guide Sold Separately.

  • Size (WxDxH):
    • 45cm x 25cm x 52cm (30L size)
    • 45cm x 25cm x 104cm (60L size)
  • Frequency Response (+/- 3dB)
    • 60Hz to 18kHz (30L size)
    • 40Hz to 18kHz (60L size)
    • The B&C DE250 compression driver has an F3 of 18Khz. Since most people over the age of 20 cannot hear over this, we don’t think this is an issue. However, the B&C DE250 has an incredibly smooth and detailed sound across its whole frequency range that is not fatiguing for longer listening sessions – such as 2-3 hour movies at loud volumes – and is considered one of the best compression drivers because of this.
  • Recommended crossover: 40Hz to 60Hz dependent on power fed to the speaker.
  • MUST BE USED WITH ROOM EQ – since we are using an off-the-shelf crossover, room EQ is a requirement.
    • The off-the-shelf crossover does not compromise sound quality – after all you either correct the response in the analogue or digital domain, there are pros and cons of each. However, this makes the design much easier to assemble. We created an equivalent custom-designed crossover during development to confirm the performance of this design. Sound quality to our ears was actually slightly better with less analogue correction of the response.
  • Cost of Build: 1 LCR10 would cost around USD 500 to build (USD 1500 altogether for Left, Center, Right)

What’s In the Book?

  • Complete CNC and Manual Drawings for cutting the MDF panels: you can either have the speakers “printed” by a CNC shop or create them manually with the tools you have at home.
  • Fully modular speaker design (INDUSTRY FIRST!!!):
    • 2 different speaker sizes: half-height and full-height
    • 3 different driver positions for the full-height boxes: top, middle and bottom, to best align with your speaker and seating positions
    • Guide on how to create a full baffle wall with matching LCRs and also fully modular subs (sub guide sold separately)
    • Ability to upgrade both the LCRs and the subs as your system grows!!! Again, no other speaker system gives you such flexibility.
  • Complete list of materials and tools required to create the speakers
  • Step by step guide on how to cut, assemble and connect the speakers up
  • Detailed discussion on design principles and performance characteristics of the speaker including power requirements and expected behavior at listening distances from 3m to 10m including the required power to hit reference levels
  • You won’t find any other speaker guide as detailed as this – we have 52 pages of design, prep and assembly with clear pictures to show you what to do. You can build a speaker even if you have never attempted to do so before. Guaranteed success first try.

    1. Hi! Thank you for your interest in the SHC LCR10 DIY Home Cinema Speaker plans! Parts Express does offer international shipping, but it’s best to check directly on your end to see if it’s available in your country. Here is the link to the crossover.
      https://www.parts-express.com/Dayton-Audio-XO2W-2K-2-Way-Crossover-2-000-Hz-260-140?quantity=1&custcol1=Dayton%20Audio%20XO2W-2K%202-Way%20Crossover%202%2C000%20Hz&custcol_ava_item=260-140&custcol_ava_incomeaccount=General&custcol_ava_upccode=844632045134&custcol_ava_pickup=F&custcol_disableshopping=F&undefined=44.99
Also, if you can find it from another seller that should be fine, as long as it is the same crossover.

  1. I am very interested in the concept of “Baffle Wall” and reviews of the Krix MX-30. That system is 335mm deep and 1220mm high. Because of your room limitations you made SHC LCR10 less high and less deep. Do you plan on making plans for a larger model, let’s say LCR30 more closely matching the dimensions of the MX-30?

    1. Hi Hans. Probably not as the actual performance is excellent even at this size. But we’ll do some upgrade options such as dual woofer for added output and coverage.
