Notes:

- There is a large difference in bitrates on the streaming versions – including the UHD version. More heavy DNR seems to have been applied.

Key Notes:
- The 1987 VHS release (the first VHS release of Aliens) was originally in Pan & Scan, which was a common practice at the time to adapt the widescreen footage for 4:3 television screens.
- The 1992 Special Edition VHS and Laserdisc were the first home media releases to include James Cameron’s Director’s Cut, which added approximately 17 minutes of footage to the theatrical release.
- DVD releases through box sets like the Alien Legacy (1999) and the Alien Quadrilogy (2003) featured the Director’s Cut and were presented in Widescreen.
- No D-Theatre (an HD format released in the early 2000s) version of Aliens was ever released.
Which version of Aliens (1986) should you watch?
When choosing a disc version of Aliens (1986), many factors such as video and audio quality, preferred version (theatrical or director’s cut), and bonus features come into play. Based on reviews and discussions across forums such as Blu-ray.com and AVS Forum, the following releases are commonly recommended:
1. Alien Anthology Blu-ray (2010)
- Why Choose This:
- This collection is often cited as the best overall Blu-ray release for the entire Alien franchise. Aliens benefits from a reasonably good video transfer with some moderate use of DNR (Digital Noise Reduction), but nothing considered overly aggressive.
- Both the theatrical cut and the director’s cut are included.
- Excellent audio quality
- Tons of bonus features across the entire collection, including documentaries, deleted scenes, and making-of content.
- Potential Downsides: The color-timing is considered to be affected by James Cameron’s Avatar, bathing the picture in teal and orange at times. However, this is Cameron’s preferred look for this film, and it works quite well here.
2. Aliens: 30th Anniversary Blu-ray (2016)
- Why Choose This:
- Improved packaging: The 30th anniversary edition features the same transfer as the Anthology Blu-ray but with better packaging.
- Potential Downsides:
- Some argue that it still relies on an older HD master that’s due for a 4K upgrade, and some purists feel that the DNR softens some details, especially in darker scenes.
3. 4K UHD Release
- Why Choose This:
- If you want a 4K version of Aliens
- Higher bitrate than the earlier releases leading to better detail levels throughout
- Dolby Vision and Dolby Atoms gives both the picture and audio an extra level of polish
- The colour-timing has less intense teal and orange as opposed to the Blu Ray release. Some viewers might prefer this. The colour-timing otherwise looks almost identical to the previous Blu Ray releases minus the de-saturation.
- Potential Downsides:
- It looks like the previous 4K scans were used and possibly even the previous 2K DI that resulted from those 4K scans considering they had to use AI upscaling.
- The mastering process used heavy DNR then applied AI upscaling to arrive at a 4K picture. As the final pass, they re-applied a light layer of artificial film grain.
- The HDR wasn’t given much attention either. It reaches only 200nits, which means that the previous SDR master was automatically scaled for this UHD release without a manual HDR pass.
- While James Cameron took offence at the fact that reviewers were upset with the release, unfortunately, there is zero evidence that this was given any time or care beyond putting the previous 2K remaster on a 4K disc with AI upscaling. We strong feel this movie deserved much better, and this was incredibly poor form from both the studio and James Cameron.
Forums’ Consensus:
- Members on Blu-ray.com forums and AVS Forum lean toward recommending the Alien Anthology Blu-ray (2010) or the Aliens 30th Anniversary Blu-ray (2016) if you want something available with good, reliable quality.
- The 4K UHD release is still excellent, but it wasn’t the 4K re-master that fans were hoping for. However, this is still a must for collectors.
- Unfortunately, the 4K iTunes stream is much more compressed than the UHD Blu Ray, and obliterates some of the fine grain included on the 4K disc release that makes the DNR palatable, and gives the image a much more organic look. We feel this might be the worst way to watch this movie, we’d rather take the 1080p Blu Ray.
Conclusion:
- Best Overall Choice (currently): Alien Anthology (2010 Blu-ray) – Excellent value, solid Blu-ray quality, both versions included.
- Best Standalone Choice for Blu-ray: Aliens: 30th Anniversary Edition (Blu-ray) – Worth choosing if you want the same quality in standalone packaging.
- Best choice for 4K collectors: UHD 4K Blu Ray
