Secrets of Audyssey 5.0 Launched

Secrets of Audyssey 5.0 has been released and launches the 5th major iteration of Secrets of Audyssey. I thought that with this release, I’ll review where we’ve been with Secrets of Audyssey from Release 1 to Release 5.

Release 1 was the initial release of Secrets of Audyssey in 2021 on the heals of YPAO – The Lost Manual and reworked that guide with Audyssey-relevant information, and microphone patterns.

Release 2 was launched later in 2021 and added new microphone patterns and a troubleshooting section. A point release later, it had the new Curve Editor Excel Tool, and then release 2.2 added a whole heap of improvements with regards to subwoofer calibration, MultEQ-X features, designing your own mic patterns, and integrating Audyssey with Dirac.

Release 3 was launched in 2022, and added a new, more professional look & feel, updated diagrams, and separate sections on Loudness Compensation, Dynamic EQ and Dynamic Volume.

Release 4 was launched in 2023, and added a brand new overview section called the 5 Pillars of Reference Playback, as well as sections on Volume and Amplification, and Content Mastering. Release 4.2 was the first release to be translated into a foreign language with French being the first one off the rank.

Release 5 is now launched with a full MultEQ-X guide. This has been a popular request, and considering that Audyssey has just added Filter Smoothing to the application, we felt it was very timely to update Secrets of Audyssey with a guide, which can be the basis for any updates going forward.

You can find the full release notes here.

There’s a lot more to say with regards to Audyssey, and we want to make sure that Secrets of Audyssey is the ultimate Audyssey guide. I hope you’ll agree that now with its 5th major iteration, Secrets of Audyssey is progressing towards that goal.

  1. Roland when is a new YPAO guide coming out to go in line with the brand new Yamaha receivers launched a few years ago. They had a major refresh and I feel an updated YPAO guide would be awesome. Have you played around with one of the newer Aventage receivers?

    1. Yes, DJ, the Lost Manual does need some loveโ€ฆ
What areas would you like updated?
Iโ€™m onto some other projects at the moment but Iโ€™m taking notesโ€ฆ

      1. Hello, Roland! i have the Secrets of Audyssey Setup Guide, it was a great purchase, and it has helped me a lot, however I am using it on a Marantz NR1510 with 5.1 channels, in this model the Audyssey has 6 microphone positions, and without access to the APP, my question is 1): even with 6 positions, should the first measurement pattern in the guide be used without changes?

Another question I have is in relation to “Midrange Compensation”, as I don’t have access to the APP, I don’t know if my Definitive technology procinema 6d speakers have the dip at 2khz or not, the speaker manual doesn’t have this information. But in the Marantz menu, in manual eq, copy curve, I believe it copies the Audissey flat curve, in the information it shows an increase of +2 to +3 db in the 2khz region, as it is a flat curve, I must assume that the speakers have a dip at 2khz, and the ideal is to use the Audissey “reference” curve?
Sorry if the questions were confusing, a big hug from Brazil!

      2. Hey Gilmar,

Glad you found the guide useful. ๐Ÿ™‚

Yes, use the existing mic patterns and just drop the last few measurements.

Mmm, thatโ€™s a difficult thing to work out without the app. But also at the same time, I would trust your earsโ€ฆ listen to both curves and see which sounds the best to you. Having midrange compensation on is not a huge deal though. I wouldnโ€™t worry too much. Thatโ€™s just polishing. ๐Ÿ™‚
