Intro

Bass shakers, also known as tactile transducers, are gaining popularity in home theater as a way to enhance the low-frequency response of your audio system.

They have been used in simulation for awhile, such as flight simulators and gaming chairs, but people soon realized they could also be used in home theaters to create more immersion. While they do not replace a subwoofer, they act as an extension, adding a powerful and physical sensation that traditional subwoofers struggle to achieve without being massive and power-hungry.

Dayton Audio is one of the leading manufacturers of budget-friendly bass shakers, offering four models to cater to different needs and preferences.

How Dayton Bass Shakers Works

Dayton Audio bass shakers use a simple design to convert electrical signals into physical vibrations. When connected to an amplifier, the shakers’ internal voice coils move a weight puck back and forth, causing the attached surface to vibrate. This is essentially a speaker minus the cone, utilizing the same voice coil and magnet technology to create vibrations instead of sound. This vibration translates into a tactile sensation that adds realism and depth to your audio experience.

Choosing the Right Bass Shaker Model

When it comes to choosing the right Dayton Audio bass shaker the two most important considerations are:

  • Power: How strong do you want the shakers to be? Higher power shakers produce more intense and deeper vibrations. They require a more powerful amplifier, so ensure your chosen amp can handle the combined power of all shakers.
  • Physical Size: Since most bass shakers are mounted inside of furniture, the size of the mounting location will impact what size shaker you can install.

Other Considerations for Bass Shakers:

  • Furniture Size: Choose a shaker with power proportional to the furniture size. Larger furniture requires more power for effective vibration.
  • Number of Seats: Plan for the number of seats to vibrate. The larger the number of seats, the more shakers you will need, which will add to the cost. Consider building a platform beneath a row of seats if necessary. More mass requires more shaker power.
  • Mounting Location: Ensure the mounting location is sturdy enough to hold the shaker and withstand constant vibration. Also, you want to make sure that the vibration can be felt while someone is sitting in the seat.
  • Amplifier: Choose an amplifier sized to handle the number and power of your shakers. Remember, cheap amplifiers may struggle with frequencies below 20Hz.
  • Equalization: Bass shakers can benefit from equalization, just like speakers. It would be beneficial to have the ability to equalize them, either through the amplifier or an external DSP.

Dayton Audio Bass Shakers

Most Powerful

Dayton Audio BST-300EX

The BST-300EX, Dayton’s most powerful shaker at 300 watts, retains the BST-1’s fundamental design while boasting a larger size for increased mass and more intense effects. This improved design also addresses previous overheating concerns associated with the BST-1. However, with the power demand of 300 watts, it is essential to pair it with a robust amplifier, as a cheap amplifier may struggle to handle its capabilities.

I currently use them for the two main seats in my theater, and I believe they offer the best cost-to-performance ratio. For a detailed review, you can check out my full thoughts [Here].

Solid Pick

Dayton Audio BST-1

The Dayton Audio BST-1 delivers a robust performance within its compact design, boasting 50 watts of power – less than the BST-300EX, but still effective. Its smaller size allows for installation in tighter spaces, providing an intense vibration. However, caution is advised as continuous operation at full power may lead to overheating; be sure to provide adequate airflow.

Priced at approximately half of the BST-300EX, the BST-1 offers a more budget-friendly option, as costs can accumulate based on the number of seats in your setup.

Midrange

Dayton Audio BST-2

Contrary to their name, these are not the second version of the BST-1, nor are they more powerful. In fact, they have a lower power rating at 35 watts and are slightly more affordable. This model features a slightly different design with a smooth exterior rather than the finned appearance.

Highlighting a focus on size and power, these units are slightly smaller at 5.15″ (13cm) compared to the BST-1 (5.75″, 14cm), but come with reduced power. Despite being more affordable, they offer added convenience with 24″ attached leads.

Budget

Dayton Audio TT25-8

These belong to the smallest and least powerful category in the Dayton lineup, with a rating of 15 watts RMS and 30-watt peaks. Ideal for fitting into confined spaces, they are easy to power. While not designed for the lowest notes, they provide a heightened level of immersion within the 20-80Hz range. Available in 8-ohm and 16-ohm options for diverse setup configurations, it is recommended to use at least 2 per seat.

They serve as an excellent entry into bass shakers – compact, easily powered, and cost-effective. For a detailed review, check out Roland’s comprehensive analysis, [Here].

Bundles

Below are some bundles that are sold that either have several shakers included, and/or also include an amp:

Benefits of using a Bass Shaker

Here are some of the benefits of using a bass shaker:

  • Improved immersion: Feel the bass, not just hear it. Bass shakers add a visceral dimension to music and movies, drawing you deeper into the experience.
  • Localized bass: Unlike subwoofers, which can cause bass to bleed into other rooms, bass shakers keep the low-frequency sensation localized to the area where they are installed.
  • Power efficiency: It takes a significant amount of sound energy to vibrate furniture, let alone a human. By directly attaching a shaker to the furniture, you can achieve the same movement with significantly less energy. This is be
  • Improved bass quality: By adding low-frequency extension, bass shakers can help improve the overall low bass balance of your system, without the need for more subs.
  • Reduced fatigue: Loud bass can cause listening fatigue. Bass shakers allow you to enjoy the impact of low frequencies without the need for excessive volume.
  • Easy installation: Compact and versatile, bass shakers can be easily mounted on chairs, couches, or other surfaces.

Conclusion

Bass shakers provide a distinctive and thrilling avenue to elevate your audio encounters. Selecting the appropriate Dayton Audio bass shaker allows you to infuse a potent and tangible dimension into your music and movie sessions, transforming your listening experience.

Personally, incorporating them into my home theater setup has significantly enhanced the immersion, taking it to an entirely new level that I truly enjoy.
