Must Have Movies

Ready Player One

Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of the popular novel is a visual effects bonanza that will transport you to a world of endless possibilities. The film’s use of CGI is stunning, and the virtual world of the OASIS is a joy to explore. Ready Player One is a virtual reality adventure that will blow your mind no matter the age.

The film’s use of CGI is some of the best ever seen, and the virtual world of the OASIS is a truly immersive experience. The sound design is also impressive, with its use of sound effects to create a sense of presence and excitement. This is a go to demo movie for many enthusiasts.

Ford V Ferrari

This racing drama will put your home theater’s surround sound system to the test. It follows the story of the Ford’s GT40 entry in the 24 Hours of Le Mans race. The film’s car racing scenes are exhilarating, and the use of sound design is immersive. Ford V Ferrari is a must-see for any fan of racing films.

The film’s car racing scenes are some of the best ever filmed, and puts you in the race car. A great overall film that leaves you wanting more at the end.

Top Gun: Maverick

If you are looking for an adrenaline rush, then Top Gun: Maverick is the movie for you. The aerial sequences are some of the most impressive ever filmed, and the use of Dolby Atmos puts you right in the cockpit with Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. You will feel like you are dodging missiles and bullets alongside him.

The sound design is also excellent, with the roar of the jet engines and the crackle of gunfire coming through crystal clear. It is further improved if you have bass shakers, as it allows you to not only hear the roar of the jets, but also feel it throughout your whole body.

John Wick: Chapter 4

John Wick 4 is another action-packed film that will showcase your home theater’s capabilities. The impeccably choreographed fight scenes and masterful sound design create a symphony of violence, ideal for an immersive home theater experience.

With stunning visuals featuring a vibrant and colorful design, coupled with HDR, this film stands out as one of the most visually appealing in recent years. The impressive sound design, marked by sharp gunshots and impactful bone crunches, also serves as a subwoofer test. This is another one of my top favorites.

Edge of Tomorrow

Edge of Tomorrow (2014) is a sci-fi action film that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The film’s use of time travel is clever and suspenseful, and the action sequences are well-paced and exciting. Edge of Tomorrow is a time-bending action film that will test your home theater’s limits.

Speaking of limits, the opening credits of the movie have extremely low bass, pushing all the way down to 10Hz. This is the stress test when it comes to infrasonic bass in a movie. Subwoofers beware.

Mad Max: Fury Road

A visually stunning action film that will put your home theater to the test with its high-octane car chases and adrenaline-pumping action sequences. Along with its stunning apocalyptic landscapes, the film’s use of color and sound is also top-notch, making it a visually exciting movie.

The film’s use of vibrant colors and high contrast is sure to make your home theater shine. The film’s sound design is equally impressive, with its use of roaring engines and thunderous explosions.

A Quiet Place

A Quiet Place offers a unique and intense horror experience that puts your home theater sound system dynamics to the test. The film’s use of silence is both terrifying and effective, showcasing impeccable sound design that alternates between loud and quiet moments.

A Quiet Place is a masterclass in sound design. The film uses sound effects to create a haunting sense of dread, making it an excellent test to the precision of your sound system as you can hear creatures walking all around you. As the near-silent film draws you in, your heart is left pounding.

Interstellar

This sci-fi epic is a visual feast, with stunning sequences of spaceships in flight, planetscapes, and alien landscapes (like the frozen plains of Mann’s planet). The use of IMAX film really pays off here, making you feel like you are right there in the midst of the action. Hans Zimmer’s score is also incredible, using both traditional orchestral elements and electronic sounds to create a sense of awe and wonder.

This movie is just an all around sci-fi fan favorite, with great sound effects, score, and stunning visuals. This is just a staple in every home theater enthusiast’s collection.

Passengers

Passengers, a compelling sci-fi drama, unfolds the narrative of two individuals prematurely awakened 90 years into a 120-year interstellar journey to a new world. The film delves into themes of love, loneliness, and morality.

Shot in remarkable 6.5K and finalized in full 4K resolution, the visuals are exceptionally sharp and stunning. Notably, Passengers stands among the early films that fully exploit the potential of the 4K format. Complementing the striking visuals, the sound design is expertly crafted, immersing the audience in a spatial auditory experience, with Dolby Atmos, that vividly captures the ambiance of a spaceship with hard hitting bass during the action scenes.

Blade Runner 2049

This neo-noir sequel is visually stunning, with a dark and moody atmosphere that is perfect for showing off your home theater’s black levels. The cinematography is masterful, and the use of light and shadow creates a real sense of mystery and suspense. The soundtrack by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross is also perfect for setting the mood, with its haunting and atmospheric soundscapes.

Hans Zimmer Live in Prague

This biopic about Queen is a must-have for any music fan. The concert scenes are especially impressive, with Queen’s music sounding better than ever in a home theater setting. Rami Malek’s Oscar-winning performance as Freddie Mercury is also sure to captivate audiences. The movie is full of energy and excitement, and it is sure to get everyone singing along.

Be sure to enjoy the concert at the end, which is shot to envelope you in the concert. It made me feel like I was in the crowd. If you are a Queen fan, you need this movie.
