Banana plugs are an often overlooked addition to a home theater setup, but they have benefits that are hard to ignore. Therefore in this article, I want to go over what they are, their benefits and how to use them.

What are Banana Plugs

The flared end is inserted into the binding post or terminal on the receiver or speaker, while the collar or screw secures the plug on the wire.

Strip Wire at least 1/2″ (12mm long.)
Screw jack on, finger tight.
Unscrew back of plug and separate it.
Repeat steps 1-4 for as many banana plugs as you need.
Insert wire into barrel and spread out strands.
While the above steps do change slightly with different models and manufacturers, the overall process is the same.

It is also pretty fail-safe for leaving it in place for years without having to re-check these.

I personally like the screw-on type of banana plug, which secures the wire with two screws over a sleeve. While this type of banana plug is a bit more difficult to use, and more old-school, they give me peace of mind. I haven’t had any issues with them over the years. So if you are a bit more old-school like me, you may prefer these.
For Quick Jobs
The last type of banana plug is something I have at hand for very quick jobs where I want to test things out or cables are getting changed regularly. This is because this screw-type plug is super easy to install: simple unscrew, insert the cable and re-screw. It could not be easier. I have a few of these at hand at all times just in case.
The only thing to keep in mind is that if you are jiggling cables at the back of your AVR or amp regularly, these can get a bit loose so you must check them every now and again for a tight fit. Also, if you live in a climate with massive temperature swings, the metal expands and contracts and can also make this a bit loose over the months and years, so again, re-tighten when you jiggle things about.
