YPAO – The Lost Manual

Notice: If you have lost your copy, please contact us. We will find your copy in the system and resend the download link.

I am here to tell you that you are leaving a LOT of performance on the table by calibrating your YPAO system using only the Yamaha manual! I know because that’s what I – and many others – did for years.

The microphone patterns in this guide are guaranteed to deliver better surround panning and imaging for both music and movies than what is included in your Yamaha manual – or your money back!

We conducted a survey in 2022, and 8 out of 10 people said that they had achieved at least a 1 point increase (on a 5 point scale) in their YPAO surround sound performance after reading The Lost Manual.

What’s in the Guide?

What Customers Are Saying…

“As a sound guy that also built our entire studio from the ground up, I appreciate all your effort put into this manual.  Good stuff that really helped dial my home Atmos receiver in well!” – Jason, Sound Engineer

“I would just like to say thanks again. I took what you said onboard and decided to give it one last try… tested each sub in the possible positions around the room. I found the best position for both then tested them together and..voilà it got rid of the null around 70hz and gave me a very flat response. Amazing. I then ran YPAO with the mic positions you suggested and it sounds fantastic.” – customer with RX-A3080 and dual subs

  1. Hi
On side 44, you wrote: “Position 2: Same position as number 1 but on the seat to the
    right of the centre seat”
But on the picture, Position 2 is directly before Position1. So I guess the picture does not correlate with your documented positions. Is that a fault, or did I not understand something?
    BR Ralf

    1. Hi Ralf,
I think you mean position 3: the wide pattern. (Corresponding to page 44 in v3.0)

If you look at the text above it says that only position 1 corresponds to Yamaha’s picture. (“However, this is where the similarities stop. To get an ideal measurement, the following is recommended:”)

But I understand this may be confusing so thank you for bringing this to my attention. I’ll try and get a 3D picture done for this mic pattern for the next version of the guide. Thx again. 🙂

For everyone’s attention: please kindly use the issue reporting link on the first page of the guide or the contact form on the site to report issues if at all possible. It makes it easier to track them and allocate them for fixes and it also guarantees a more timely response in case I miss the comment on here. Much appreciate it. 🙂

    1. Hi Tom, the link is send in email straight away. I have just resent it from the system. Please kindly check in your spam folder in case the link landed there. Thanks!

  2. Love these guides Roland… They give you so much more detail than the standard manual gives you. Its helped me understand key aspects of YPAO and the associated settings! Just got the REW one as i am about to try and get my Monolith 15 and REL 212 playing together!

    1. Thank you so much for that feedback, Dan. I’m really glad you’re finding them useful. 🙂
Both of those subs have excellent time-domain performance for their class. They should be relatively easy to integrate with careful placement.
Please let us know how you go! 🙂
